1:10 In 1957, Kees Boecke, a Dutch teacher, assembled an elegant introduction to scale at a universal level, from atom to universe. Starting with a overhead view of a Dutch girl holding her cat, Cosmic View covered that span in forty  jumps.

 

After the girl, each of the book's next 24 pages jumps out by a factor of ten -- what scientists call an order of magnitude -- with the previous image reduced to a one-tenth size square in the middle.

1:10Starting again with the Dutch girl, the book zooms in, an order of magnitude at a time, right to the atomic level, at that same scale as the electromagnetic waves, an x-ray from the top, gamma ray from the left.
 
Note that as things get smaller, the exponent -- the smaller number to the right and a bit above the 10, is negative, and the ratio of measured size to image size that started at 1:10, gets right out of hand as we approach the atomic level: what we see in the image is actually ten billion times smaller.
